Hurricane Irma was a monster storm the likes of which the Caribbean and United States hadn’t seen in a while. While tourism usually rebounds after major storms, we haven’t seen an active Atlantic hurricane season like this for nearly a decade and many travel brands will need to think long-term to recover. — Dan Peltier, Skift Travel Journalist Wave season (which typically starts in January) is when travelers and the tourism industry goes into overdrive booking up the winter, spring, and summer Caribbean trips. We have seen it start as early as November in recent years and the trend isn't slowing down. What this means for you: With many resorts and islands in a recovery phase, this means there will be a scarcity of resorts and cruise itineraries to handle all of the demand. The best deals and best resorts will go first and early. After that, travelers will be left with the remainder of what has not sold out. This includes:

- Specialty room categories such as Beach Front, Butler, Concierge Level, etc.

- The least expensive room categories, forcing more expensive upgrades

- Capacity controlled discounts and promotions

Our Advice: Book early and purchase travel insurance. By booking early, you can offset the cost of travel insurance but you still have coverage in case obstacles arise.
